What to look for in a Business Coach

When seeking out a business coach, there are five things you should look for — and one that may seem like an important quality, but actually isn’t that important at all!

What to look for:

  1. Broad and deep business and executive experience
  2. Good chemistry: Ability to trust and be completely open
  3. Proven coaching methodology and process
  4. Access to resources (e.g., assessments, coaching curriculum, additional expertise)
  5. A professional coach with a certification

What NOT to look for? Deep industry knowledge. While a consultant needs industry expertise to solve a problem for you, a coach needs to have an objective perspective to help you solve your own problems. In fact, working with someone who has deep common industry or company expertise can actually be detrimental. That person could bring a lot of pre-conceived notions to the table that may not work for your business or specific problem.

If you’re looking for a business coach who has a broad range of experience, a proven methodology, expert resources, and an industry certification, let’s talk and see if we also have chemistry! I’d love to help you reach the next level in your business and help you get where you want to go. To get started, email me at pcabalka@schaperinc.com.
